Alchemilla: Ultra-Pure Organic Skin Care

all natural skin care productsMost of you are overwhelmed by the “toxic ingredient list” of skin care products making it difficult to weed out the nasty, and some of you are just too darned lazy to figure it all out, so I am going to give you a partial  list of the best natural skin products available for purchase….products that according to the skin deep website have a zero hazard rating, in other words products that have an extremely low toxic danger.

For those of you who have not been following this blog, Skin Deep is a site dedicated to keeping the cosmetic consumer safe and more importantly to bring awareness to cosmetic consumers not only regarding unsafe, toxic cosmetics or all natural skin care and non-toxic products,  but also encouraging companies to get on the band wagon and sign the Compact For Safe Cosmetics.

The more that people begin to show concern and purchase all natural skin products, the more these big companies will work at altering their ingredients.

“Our aim was to fill in where companies and the government leave off: companies are allowed to use almost any ingredient they wish, and our government doesn’t require companies to test products for safety before they’re sold. EWG’s scientists built Skin Deep to be a one-of-a-kind resource, integrating our in-house collection of personal care product ingredient listings with more than 50 toxicity and regulatory databases.

You may be shocked when you enter your favorite cosmetics products into the database only to find out that they have a high hazard score, and may be causing more damage to your skin long term. A better use of the site however, would be to enter a category such as skin cream or eye cream and only purchase the products listed with a zero hazard score. The zero’s are listed first by default and you will be surprised at how many natural skin products there are! Of course you have never heard of them.

Some of these products can be purchased at your local pharmacy however most may have to be purchased at a health food store, vitamin store or online. I have purchased and continue to purchase my very favorite products online.

Disappointing news today on Oprah. Dr. Oz is insistent that there is absolutely no way to get rid of cellulite. Cellulite removal creams don’t work. You must live with it. Bummer. Don’t waste your money on drugstore products with loads of chemicals that don’t work anyway. Thank you Dr. Oz.

flicker 3While poking around in my local pharmacy store recently, I found the following label on a very popular body lotion. The label boasts “incredibly soft skin with jojoba oil and vitamin E.” Sounds yummy. I would love to slather my body with jojoba oil! Sounds like natural skin care to me. Don’t be fooled. Here is the list of ingredients:

Water, myristyl alcohol, glycerin, mineral oil, butylenes glycol, alcohol denat, stearic acid, petrolatum, myristyl myristate, glyceryl stearate, hydrogenated coco-glycerides, dimethicone, simondsia chinensis seed oil (jojoba), tocopheryl  acetate, polygyceryl-2 caprate, Phenoxyethanol, lanolin alcohol, fragrance, sodium hydroxide, methylparaben, ethylparaban, proylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben.

What the heck?? There are three alcohols, five of the nasty parabens (which have the potential to cause cancer), and tocopheryl acetate which is a synthetic vitamin E and not the natural vitamin E. Read the rest of this entry…

skin cancerSummer is in full swing (well everywhere but here in the Northeast anyway), and since you have probably been soaking up lots of sun, you may want to consider taking advantage of free nationwide screenings offered by the American Academy of Dermatology or The Skin Cancer Foundation. Just plug in your city or state and get a list of dates in your area.

If you can’t find a free screening in your area, your insurance company may cover all costs for the initial visit at the dermatologists office. Most do. It’s quick and painless. Last May, because of some strange changes taking place with two skin imperfections on the back of my leg, I high-tailed it over to a dermatologist and was in and out in under an hour.

If you have any risk-factors or are particularly concerned about something on your skin, you should see a dermatologist immediately. I am writing this today because over the weekend, while my husband and I visited friends, I learned that two out of the three women I was with have just had skin cancer removed from the face. ……and the “flat belly rule” ads and the “lose wrinkles in a week” ads. Enough already! The following ads were all shown together on one of my favorite websites.

DON’T Pay For White Teeth
Learn the trick, discovered by a mom, to turn yellow teeth white w/ $10
www.SharonsTeethStory.com

Anybody else see what’s wrong with this? These paid advertisements are polluting the internet. They’re fake. Made up to get you to buy not one but 2 teeth whitening products. There is no teeth whitening trick discovered by a mom. The products they are selling will do the same as any whitening product you find in your local pharmacy store. The only difference is that you have signed up for 2 recurring payments taken from your credit card each month.

Almost every website I visit is infested with these ads. I’m thinking that with the gazillion of them floating around, millions of suckers around the country must be buying. So by now, shouldn’t everyone have a flat stomach, glaring white teeth and look thirty-something? This is not happening.

or how about this….also on the exact same page of a weather site:

and if you’re from Austin or New York or Cleveland well, you know how it works. And Rachel Ray has absolutely nothing to do with this stuff!  Nor does Oprah! Am I the only one getting pissed off by this?

The number one problem with every single one of these “try it for free” ads is that they will charge your credit card for the products whether you cancel within the trial period or not. There are thousands of people being charged even after they cancelled. So do the products work? Maybe, but who cares? if they are charging your credit card after you cancelled your free trial or not sending product that you paid for and they do the same as any other whitening product on the market…..then what does it matter?

Now here’s a Natural Teeth Whitening Product discovered by little ole me, a mom from NH…hee-hee, couldn’t resist. If you want an effective teeth whitening product that truly works without a monthly charge to your credit card this is it.

Update December 13th: On December 1st the FTC placed new laws in effect for false testimonials and decieving ads on infomercials, internet, radio, etc. They are still at it. Here is a great video of the latest scam. They are now following the FTC guidelines however by placing huge, and I mean huge disclaimers at the bottom of the page and if you take the time to read them, they are pretty comical:

safe nail polsihHere’s another handy dandy shopping card to keep with you, this one listing safe nail polish.

Over the last several years, scientists and researchers have found direct links to health related problems among nail salon workers and three chemical ingredients in nail polish. There is a reason that they wear those masks, so why don’t we?

The “toxic trio” that are of most concern are toluene, which can cause simple headaches and eye, ear, nose and throat irritation to nervous system disorders and damage to the liver and kidneys, formaldehyde, and dibutyl phthalate which studies have linked to underdeveloped genitals and other reproductive system problems in newborn boys.

So why is DPT banned from cosmetics in Europe but not here in the U.S. even though the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found DBP and other toxic phthalates in the bloodstreams of every person they tested?

Even though most companies have agreed to remove these three dangerous ingredients, nail polish in general is laden with chemicals. It may be wiser to purchase safe nail polish at natural health and beauty supply stores. The following is a partial list of companies who offer chemical free nail products for purchase online:

* FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 2, 2009

WASHINGTON – In an affirmation of Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) three-year campaign for more effective sunscreens, 70 percent of sunscreens offered for the 2009 beach season contain strong UVA filters, compared to just 29 percent last year. Top brands reformulated to better protect against UVA radiation include Solbar, Zia Natural Skincare, Nivea, L’Oreal, and Hawaiian Tropic. This is a move in the right direction, but each of these products still rates relatively low compared to the top-ranked brands.

Another plus in 2009: 19 percent fewer sunscreens contains oxybenzone, an active ingredient that disrupts the hormone system.

But a new EWG investigation of 1,572 sunscreens and other sun-blocking products currently on the market found that 3 of 5 sunscreens either don’t protect skin from sun damage or contain hazardous chemicals — or both. Read the rest of this entry…

natural skin treatmentok…so you’all know how addicted I am to organic Argan Oil. I write about it often because I think most people (including myself at one time), are throwing away gazillions of dollars on hyped up skin care products that just DO NOT WORK.

Along comes an all natural skin care treatment that truly works and very little people know about it. Why? Because most big companies would rather fill their products with junk ingredients and chemical fillers to make the most profit and most people believe what they are being told through advertising. Big companies and manufacturers spend more money to advertise a product than what is spent on ingredients to put in the product. Read the rest of this entry…
